Gibraltar Road/La Cumbre Peak: Club Ride January 28, 2017

By popular demand, there will be a ride featuring the iconic Gibraltar Road on January 28, 2017.  This is an out and back ride leaving promptly at 9 AM from in front of the Padaro Beach Grill on Santa Claus Lane.  To reach the departure location for the ride, take the 101 Fwy to the exit marked “Santa Claus Lane/Padaro Lane.  Make a left after exiting the freeway and another left onto Santa Claus Lane.  There is plenty of parking all along the street.

Gibraltar Road is generally acknowledged to be the most challenging climb in our area. It is also viewed as very rewarding both for the views it offers and the sense of accomplishment in reaching the top. Our turn around point will be La Cumbre Peak. Our route will be using the scenic East Mountain Road above Montecito to get to Gibraltar Road.   There will be a brief regrouping stop at the Pierre Lafond Market and Deli in Montecito, both on the way out and on the return trip.   A bathroom is available as well as water, excellent pastries, and protein type bars, etc.

Between now and January 28 there are a number of standard club rides that will offer good preparation for the Gibraltar ride, such as the two scheduled Casitas Pass rides. A link to the Janurary 28 route is provided below using RidewithGPS.   The length of the ride is approximately 43 miles and the total elevation gain is about 5224 feet.  I estimate the time the ride will take to be around five or six hours. The Padaro Beach Grill offers a convenient option as a place to eat upon our return. This should be a fun and memorable ride. Please let me know if you think you might be going on this ride and if you have previously climbed Gibraltar. If we don't happen to discuss it on a club ride before January 28, you can email me at <TimTemail@mac.com> or text me at (805) 914-4819.  I’ll ask for a definitive head count a week or so before the ride. Take care and safe riding to all.
